The European Commission’s CORDIS editorial team has highlighted the achievements of the VIT (VITrimers) project in a recently published Results in Brief article entitled “Recyclable polyethylene reveals damage and insulate cables”.

The article showcases the project’s development of recyclable vitrimeric polyethylene materials capable of both self-reporting damage and maintaining high-performance insulation properties. By incorporating optical sensing elements into the polymer network, the consortium created smart materials that can reveal mechanical damage, oxygen ingress or moisture penetration through changes in colour or fluorescence, enabling early detection of degradation.

The CORDIS feature also highlights the potential of these recyclable vitrimers for demanding applications such as high-voltage cable insulation, demonstrating how advanced polymer materials can contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy.
